The Ex-Files: How do we deal with our children’s expenses after separation

Question: My husband and I have separated. We are a wealthy family with several property interests including a wine estate. We have discussed dividing our assets but haven’t yet talked about how we are going to deal with our children’s expenses.

Our children are becoming young adults, and over the next five years or so will be graduating from high school, going to university and establishing themselves. While we were together my husband and I always planned to assist our children financially during this time.

I would like to have a set agreement about these expenses so we are contributing equally. Our 18-year-old daughter is going to the University of Canterbury and wants us to give her $100,000 to fund her first year with fees and her university hostel fees. She is a spender. Is this a good idea?
